What "small batch" actually means in Guangdong

A lot of factories won't talk to you under 1,000 units. But plenty of studios in Huizhou and Shenzhen will do small batch China sourcing at 50–200 pieces — especially ceramics, textiles, and stationery.

Example: a Huizhou studio we work with does hand-thrown ceramic mugs. Their minimum is 100 pieces per glaze color. Not 10,000. The catch? They don't speak English, they don't ship overseas, and they want payment in RMB.

The real costs (no fake numbers)

We won't invent a SKU weight for you. But here are bands we've seen in 2024–2025:

• Sample fee: USD 30–80 per item, often refundable against a bulk order.
• Small-batch unit price: typically 15–30% higher than the 1,000-piece rate. That's normal.
• Domestic freight (factory to Shenzhen forwarder): USD 20–60 for 20–50 kg.
• International shipping: depends on volume. A 20 kg air parcel to the US runs roughly USD 120–200 via a Shenzhen forwarder.
• Our concierge fee: quoted per project. No hidden markup on the factory price.

Why Etsy sellers get burned (and how to avoid it)

Most bad experiences come from three things:

1. Photos that lie. The sample looks great; the bulk order is a different glaze. Always ask for a pre-shipment video of the actual batch. 2. No export paperwork. A tiny studio may not have an export license. A Shenzhen forwarder can handle consolidation and customs for you. 3. Payment risk. PayPal gives you buyer protection. Bank transfer to a stranger does not. We recommend PayPal for first orders, then move to T/T once trust is built.

We've seen sellers lose USD 800 on a "too good" quote. Don't be that person.

The 孤品 angle: one-of-a-kind pieces

Some Etsy sellers don't want 200 identical mugs. They want 孤品 — literally "orphan pieces," one-offs. Huizhou and Shenzhen have studios that sell single pieces or tiny runs of 5–20.

Timeline: what to expect

From first message to your door:

• Week 1: You send references. We confirm the maker and get a sample quote.
• Week 2–3: Sample made and shipped to you (or to us for photos).
• Week 4: You approve. We place the small-batch order.
• Week 5–7: Production. We send progress photos.
• Week 8: Forwarder consolidates and ships. Tracking in your inbox.

That's 6–8 weeks for most small-batch ceramic or textile orders. Faster if the maker has stock.

Do you need a China company? No.

You need:

• A supplier who accepts PayPal or works with an agent who does.
• A Shenzhen or Huizhou forwarder for export and shipping.
• Someone local to inspect and negotiate. That's us.
