How we pack fragile handmade ceramics for export from Guangdong

Handmade ceramics look tough in photos — until a single corner hits the cargo belt.

From our Huizhou & Shenzhen workflow, here’s the packing standard we use for overseas buyers sourcing Jingdezhen / Guangdong pottery, gaiwan sets, and one-of-a-kind (*gupin*) cups.

Why ceramics break in transit

Most breakage is not “bad luck.” It’s usually:

1. Seller retail packing — thin foam + one box, built for domestic courier, not air/sea export 2. Void space — cups rattle and chip each other 3. No second outer carton — the first box takes every impact 4. Mixed loads — ceramics next to heavy hardware in a consolidated parcel

Our export packing checklist

Before anything leaves Guangdong, we:

• Photo-QC glaze, rim chips, lid fit, and color variation
• Wrap each piece individually (bubble + corner protection for lids)
• Separate layers so cups never stack hard-on-hard
• Double-box with foam fill — inner gift/retail box + rigid outer carton
• Mark fragile and keep ceramics in a dedicated zone of the consolidated shipment when possible

What you should ask any China agent

• Will you re-pack for export, or ship the seller’s original bag as-is?
• Can I see QC photos after packing, not only product beauty shots?
• Is the piece gupin / one-of-a-kind? (No identical replacement if damaged — insurance/refund rules matter.)
• What’s the plan for fragile claims within the first 48 hours of delivery?
